Comic books were once America's #1 literary form. In 1946 and '47, comics were outselling traditional books 540 million to 429 million. An average of 45 million comics were sold each month. Many libraries and educators thought this was a dangerous trend, and soon articles were being published connecting comic books with juvenile crime, despite research at the time finding no significant correlation between the two.
